Outline Of The Roman Catholic Mass
The following is intended to be a general outline of what to expect at a Catholic Mass. It is a general overview and does not contain every heading or option contained in the Mass and should not be used when planning a wedding program.
The Catholic wedding ceremony may be administered in two basic forms or " Rites". The marriage ceremony may be performed During a Mass or Outside of a Mass. Both of these Rites are equally valid in the eyes of the Church.
A wedding During the Mass is referred to as a Nuptial Mass. A wedding ceremony Outside of Mass is termed as a Liturgy of the Word Service.
The ceremony starts with the entrance procession. The minister then greets and welcomes the people and prays the Opening Prayer.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
A reading from Scripture is followed by the singing of a Psalm and then another reading from Scripture. Next is the reading from the Gospel followed by the Homily where the priest or deacon will speak about marriage.
THE RITE OF MARRIAGE
After an introduction and some questions addressed to the couple, they will declare their Consent to marry. This followed by the Blessing and Exchange of Rings and the Prayer of the Faithful or General Intercessions. If the Liturgy of the Eucharist is not included, the Nuptial Blessing and Lord’s Prayer follow.
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
If the marriage is celebrated during Mass, the Liturgy of the Eucharist follows, along with the distribution of Holy Communion. It incorporates the Lord’s Prayer and Nuptial Blessing.
This segment is the conclusion of the Mass and contains the final prayers and blessings.
