THE RITE OF MARRIAGE OUTSIDE OF MASS
(Often referred to as a Liturgy Of The Word.)

This ceremony is chosen when a Catholic marries a baptized person of another Christian faith or if you prefer a shorter ceremony.

This version can also be chosen when the couple does not attend Mass on a regular basis or for those who would simply prefer a shorter ceremony

This ceremony will focus on the word of God. It will include Scripture Readings and a homily from your officiate. The homily or sermon, is when the officiate addresses those who are gathered for the ceremony. Following the homily you will give your exchange of consent and say your vows. Also included will be a Blessing and Exchange of the Rings, Nuptial Blessing, Prayers and Concluding Rite.

In certain cases, this form of celebration may also include the Rite of Holy Communion. When Holy Communion is distributed, the presiding priest or deacon will likely make it clear that only (Roman) Catholics who are properly disposed may come forward to receive. Couples may also wish to note this in their wedding program and speak to non-Catholic guests beforehand.

This Rite of Marriage is just as valid in the eyes of the Church as a full Nuptial Mass.

For Planning Purposes: this ceremony will be approximately 30 - 45 minutes long.

This version of the wedding ceremony does not require the presence of a priest. A Liturgy of The Word , may be officiated by a Catholic deacon.

The wedding ceremony is traditionally held at the parish of the bride or the Catholic partner, but it may also be held at an alternate Catholic church with the permission of the presiding priest and the agreement of the receiving pastor.

Help your non-Catholic guests participate in your ceremony. Providing a wedding program is the thoughtful way to make them feel comfortable and included.
