When planning your Catholic wedding ceremony, you will meet with your priest who will decide whether you will be exchanging your vows in a ceremony During Mass or Outside of Mass.

Your wedding ceremony is entitled "The Rite of Marriage" by the Catholic Church. The word "Rite" indicates a solemn or religious ceremony performed in an established or prescribed manner.

There are three forms of the Rite of Marriage:

  • The Rite for Celebrating Marriage During Mass
  •

  • The Rite for Celebrating Marriage outside Mass ( Liturgy of the Word)
  •

  • The Rite for Celebrating Marriage Between a Catholic and an Unbaptized Person
  •

All three forms are considered to be no more or less valid in the eyes of the church and they all give the couple the grace and blessings received through the Marriage liturgy.

When you meet with your priest he will determine whether you will exchange your vows during a Mass or during a Liturgy of the Word.

Your priest may ask you to consider the following questions:

  • What is our relationship to the Sunday Eucharist?
  • Do we regularly celebrate with our faith community on Sunday?
  • Have we been away from the community's prayer?
  • Have we committed ourselves to returning?
  • Will most of our family and friends be able to participate in the Eucharist if we have a Mass?

After reviewing your personal needs and deciding on the appropriate Rite, you will be invited to form a ceremony within the guidelines of the established Rite.
